North Korea Joins International Space Treaty

The North Korean government has become a signatory to the 1966 Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space and has notified the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of the communist country's intent to join the 1974 Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space providing further evidence of a space launch intent, according to RAI Novosti.

"We've informed the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Maritime Organization and other international bodies of the necessary information for the safe navigation of planes and ships as part of efforts to prepare for launching the Kwangmyongsong-2 (meaning "Bright Star" in Korean), an experimental communications satellite, by carrier rocket Unha-2,'' North Korea's Central News Agency said earlier this morning.

Intelligence agenices say that launch will now occur between April 4 through 8 while diplomats begin to express concern that North Korea may soon violate the 2006 United Nation Resolution 1718 directing the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea government not to launch a ballsitc missile.
