India to send space mission to Mars next year
India is pushing ahead with its ambitious Mars Mission in which an Indian spacecraft will orbit Mars. The booster rocket has a target Earth liftoff date of November 27, 2013. The spacecraft is expected to take 300 days to reach the Martian orbit, arriving in September 21, 2014, if all proceeds as now planned. It is known as the Mangalyaan mission - meaning Mars spacecraft in Hindi.
If India's Mangalyaan mission is successful, it would become the 4th nation to successfully explore Mars from its orbit behind the United States, Russia and Europe. Japan and China's attempts failed but both are expected to try again.
