Galactic cosmic rays are a risk challenge to deep space journeys by humans

Just outside the protective layer of Earth's atmosphere and magnetosphere, is a universe full of radiation. What happens to our bodies when we leave the surface of Earth to travel in space or visit the International Space Station?  Galactic cosmic rays are one of the most important barriers standing in the way of plans for interplanetary travel by crewed spacecraft.
